You’ve probably heard from reading the web or talking to an SEO consultant about the importance of blogging. However, even as an SEO specialist for the past five years, sometimes it’s difficult to explain to clients in multiple unique industries how exactly to create SEO friendly blogs for their niche.

Over the past few years, Google has morphed into a more dynamic search engine. It no longer just reads metatags while scraping your site’s content for keywords to determine rankings. Instead, social media relevance has become increasingly important. Websites that are attracting large amounts of viewership due to insightful content results in high rankings. And this is how it should be.

The companies that invest the most time into their websites and creates the most value for their customers should rank the highest; Not the websites that have the most artificial links, metatags, and keywords stuffed away.

Blogging is one of the best ways to create real value for your customers — if it’s done right. Posts about personal ramblings generally don’t provide much value when compared to education. Below, I’ll outline the steps you should follow to find a good blog topic, create value, and in turn improve your website’s online visibility.

#1) Search the web. Go on Google and look up variations of your revenue driving keywords that you’d like to rank higher for. Google doesn’t care as much about exactly keyword matching anymore. Therefore, general phrases containing your terms and their variations work well.

Target searcher intent — not exact match phrases of keywords. For example, if I’m trying to target searchers looking for ‘how to write SEO friendly blog posts‘, I can look up that string of text on Google search. Right away, in Google’s search suggestions, I see bolded keywords such as ‘content‘ ‘how to optimize‘ ‘effectively‘.

I know that I should include these general keywords in my post because this is what people are looking for. Note the title of this post.

#2) Draft valuable content. From the search results that rank the highest, we get an idea of what kind of stuff is already out there and how we can improve upon it. For my search, I notice that many of the posts are from 2014, almost a year ago. I know that Google has continued to dramatically change their search algorithm each quarter. The content is outdated, which is why I’ve decided that it would be valuable to post an updated article.

#3) Title. The title of your blog post is very important. Questions generally garner better responses than statements. Just think…people go on Google to answer their questions.

Secondly, within your title, you should take a look at what is currently ranking well, and try to utilize those keywords Google bolded as common searches.

#4) Images. Adding an image is important for many reasons. First off, it’s hard to read through a block of text, and it’s boring. Images should aid in you explaining your point. It also provides an opportunity for you to add alternate text so your image will show up on image queries.

#5) Metatags. Yes, these things are still important. Your meta title tag should reflect your targeted keywords. For my post, it would be, “SEO-Friendly Blogging, Blog Effectively for SEO, Content for SEO Blog” (along those lines depending on what I feel like is most relevant).

With these five tips, we hope that you’ll get off on the right track towards creating effective and valuable blog posts to assist your website’s SEO. For more information, we strongly urge you to check out our partner’s webinar on Moz called, ‘Cracking the SEO Code for 2015’
